5 Marc Andreessen Rules for Building a Faster Startup

Amazon, Airbnb and Microsoft each learned one of them the hard way. Here’s how to run all five in your company this week.

Three years ago this month, Marc Andreessen posted 5,200 words to the a16z website.

Founders screenshotted it.

They put “We believe in ambition” in their LinkedIn headlines.

Then on Monday morning they ran their company exactly the way they had on Friday.

a16z’s own episode on the Techno-Optimist Manifesto, with Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.

The manifesto gets quoted as a mood. It was written as a set of rules.

Let’s dive in 👇

Brought to you by Omnisend

Want your biggest Black Friday yet? Put a clock on it.

Black Friday is a month away, and every inbox is about to fill with “limited time only.” Your customers have seen “last chance” so often this year that their brain skips straight past it.

A deadline nobody can see isn’t a deadline. It’s a suggestion.

So Omnisend fixed it. The countdown timer is now built straight into the email builder. A live clock, ticking down inside your customer’s inbox every time they open your email.

Tick. Tock. Sold.

⏳ Puts the clock in front of them. Your customer watches the minutes drain while they decide. That’s when hesitation turns into checkout.

🔁 Runs while you sleep. Drop it into your automation flows and every promotional email goes out with urgency baked in.

🎨 Looks like you, not a bolt-on. Your fonts, your colours, days down to seconds.

🚪 Slams the door when time’s up. At zero, your own image takes over. “You missed it” stings. Next time, they won’t.

Until now, a timer meant paying for a third-party tool and hoping it didn’t break mid-launch. That’s gone. No extra app, no HTML hacks, no extra bill. Drag, drop, set the end date, done.

Your competitors will say “limited time.” Yours will show it, second by second.

Live now on Omnisend’s Standard and Pro plans.

The Manifesto in 60 Seconds ⏱️

If you never read all 5,200 words, here’s what’s in it:

  • 🚀 Growth is everything. Every good thing sits downstream of it. Stop growing and you get zero-sum infighting, then decline.

  • 🧠 AI is alchemy. Sand, taught to think.

  • 💸 Cheap beats expensive. Rich beats poor. Abundant beats scarce.

  • 🏆 Merit and radical competence. Plus an absolute rejection of resentment.

  • 🌍 Technology doesn’t care who you are. A positive attitude and a cheap laptop are enough to contribute.

  • ⚔️ An enemies list. Stagnation, bureaucracy, vetocracy, gerontocracy, regulatory capture, cartels.

It got savaged on arrival. The SF Standard compared the prose to LinkedIn “bro-etry”. Political scientist Henry Farrell likened it to a religious creed.

Yet even critics conceded ground. Nate Silver said he agreed with roughly 84% of it.

My First Ever AMA

You know the email.

“Loved meeting you. Not quite right for us at this stage. Keep us posted.”

Translation: no. And no idea why.

Was it the traction? The deck? The valuation? You never find out.

This time you can ask.

On Thursday 29 October at 4pm GMT, we’re hosting a live call for paid subscribers and free trialists. No camera-off webinar. You bring the problem, we dig into it with you.

Straight answers. Uncomfortable ones included.

🧭 Me. MessageLabs from tiny team to $700m exit, then co-founded Notion Capital. Operator and investor.

📣 Paul Watson. Sales won’t move? Paul works out who to sell to, what to say and how to make it repeatable.

💰 David Levine. CEO of Glenluna Ventures, Principal at Manchester Angels. Story, valuation, who to approach. Wonderfully blunt.

🛠 Your tools, actually opened. Investor readiness check, the 30-second deck test, and the filter across 2,500+ investors.

Three experts on your problem would normally take three intros and a lot of diary juggling. Here, it comes with your subscription.

Places are limited. More calls on 25 November and 10 December.

The Line That Actually Matters 🎯

Our enemy is stagnation.

Most readers took it as a shot at Washington.

Jeff Bezos had already written the startup version. In his 2016 letter to shareholders, he called it Day 2. First stasis. Then irrelevance. Then painful decline. Then death.

Here’s the uncomfortable part.

Day 2 doesn’t arrive from outside. Founders build it themselves, one reasonable-sounding approval at a time.

And every company that dies of it was run by people who believed in ambition.

Five of the 113 beliefs are the antidote. Most founders adopted the other 108.
